Interview with Coach Heidi: All About the Holiday Accountability Challenge
Where did the idea for this holiday accountability challenge come from?
“Well, Krewe’s Leadership Team knows that each of us—coaches and members alike—face challenges that either prevent us from making it to the gym or make our time at the gym less productive. To address this, we’ve created initiatives like the 90-day check-ins to understand how people are doing and how we can best support them.
Through these check-ins, many members expressed interest in accountability coaching, which inspired us to build options for it. The Holiday Accountability Challenge is our way of kicking this off, starting at the end of November.”
Common Barriers to Gym Attendance
Why do people stop coming to the gym, even if they were regulars before?
“It varies for everyone. For those who used to come regularly but are now missing weeks at a time, there’s often apprehension about facing their current fitness status compared to where they used to be.
I’ve experienced this myself when returning from an injury—it’s tough not to compare where you are now to your past self or even where you’d like to be. Additionally, the physical challenge of workouts can feel intimidating, especially after time away.”
Insights from 90-Day Check-ins
How have the 90-day check-ins helped identify these challenges?
“They’ve allowed for one-on-one conversations about individual experiences. Sometimes it’s life circumstances like demanding work schedules or chronic tightness/injuries keeping people away.
These targeted conversations often uncover both the reasons behind absences and potential solutions. Right now, about 25% of Krewe’s members participate in these check-ins, and that number is steadily increasing.”
Maximizing Time at the Gym
What do you mean when you say people aren’t getting the most out of their time at the gym?
“This depends on how long someone has been a member or how familiar they are with this type of workout. For long-time members, there’s often a mindset of comparing their current selves to their past performance. While this can sometimes be motivating, it can also lead to unrealistic expectations.
For newer members, it’s about starting with a longevity mindset—focusing on sustainable habits rather than chasing quick results. For everyone, small adjustments to priorities or workout routines can lead to big improvements.”
Small Changes That Make a Big Difference
Can you give an example of these small adjustments?
“Sure. I worked with someone dealing with chronic tightness that prevented them from lifting a barbell from the ground. I recommended a mobility routine 3x/week, done during the first five minutes of the warm-up. This small change significantly improved their range of motion.”
All About the Holiday Accountability Challenge
Can participants choose what they want accountability for?
“Yes! We will all focus on attendance as the holiday season disrupts routines, but I hope participants also use this opportunity to rethink their fitness goals. It’s a great chance to maximize their membership and make progress on areas they’ve struggled with independently.”
